Julia Mancini
Mixed media
My work is conceived as a constellation of pieces that, through their interconnections, weave a broader composition. A multiplicity of elements attempts to link the fragmented islands that make up humanity. I draw upon objects, concepts, entities, and characters—sometimes modern myths, artworks, or personal fictions.
Several major themes permeate my practice, such as identity, relationships with others, language, and communication. Each piece carries its own meaning, yet when interconnected, they aspire to another level of significance. The persistence of meaning over time, as well as the use of archives, often runs subtly through both my working process and the finished works.
In my practice, I always leave ample room for experimentation and human exchange—whether in performative contexts such as the 35h residency, or during my stay with the Carmelite nuns in 2017, which resulted in four short films. For each project, the needs of the realization determine not only the materials to be used, but also the artistic media required.
