«Art is a human necessity»
What characterizes her artistic approach is her focus on the immediacy of the creative process, allowing her to respond in a flexible and dynamic way. Her work does not merely represent outward form; it is always the expression of an inner attitude, an empathic state. Smooth, polished, finely honed, and impeccably finished surfaces confront raw, unfinished, and fragmented ones. Perhaps this is why the works that seem to have been created in a state of crisis or imminent failure appear the most intense and compelling.
By concentrating on individual fragments, details, and hidden structures—as Barbara Schnetzler does in her work—one realizes, instead of perceiving a holistic representation of the motif, that each particle, no matter how small, releases energy, can trigger change, and thus contributes to the functioning of the whole.
Art is always concerned with a basic visual understanding of structures and contexts, and with how our critical-analytical vision and our contemplative-empathic perspective relate to both the outer and inner world—and how both contribute to our understanding of the world. Art is a gift that helps us find our place in the world and continually re-experience and reposition ourselves. Our world exists in a constant dynamic and circular flux to which it is imperative that we respond. Things are changing and entering into dialogue. These movements, and the way Barbara Schnetzler seeks to position humanity within the world through her work, make her art a source of inspiration.
